Outlook does not open or stops responding. What can I do?

Outlook no longer responds or cannot be opened, instead the following error message may appear, e.g.:


Outlook error messages are not always informative, therefore the cause of the error and its solution may vary from account to account (or client to client).

Below you will find a few tips and tricks to solve a variety of possible errors by yourself.

Run Outlook in safe mode:
  • Execute Outlook.exe /safe via Win+R.
Create a new Outlook profile:
  1. Under Control Panel (show small icons) -> E-mail (Outlook).
  2. Create new profile and set it as default profile (alternatively delete old profile)
  3. Afterwards link mail accounts, incl. any Outlook files (.pst)
Remove Outlook files:
  1. Under Control Panel (show small icons) -> Mail (Outlook).
  2. Remove the Outlook file in the Data Files tab of Account Settings.
